Dubai unveils AED12bn, 1000MW solar park

Dubai announced plans to build a AED12bn (US$3.27bn) solar energy park with a potential capacity of 1000MW.

Under the Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, the emirate plans to reduce energy imports and climate-warming CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030, using its solar power and nuclear power imported from neighbouring Abu Dhabi to reduce its reliance on gas.

Named after Dubai ruler, Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will cover an area of 48km2. The first plant, with a capacity of 10MW, is planned to start operations by end-2013. It will cost around AED120m.

“Members of the Supreme Council of Energy are financing the project,” said council vice-chairman Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, referring to the plant. They include government entities such as Dubai Supply Authority, Dubai Petroleum Establishment, Dubai Aluminium Company and Emirates National Oil Company. For the financing of the balance, the council is considering options such as developing a clean energy fund. It will also encourage private partnership, council secretary-general and chief executive Nejib Zaafrani said.
