Japan’s November power demand declines 5.4% YoY

Japan’s power demand for November registered a 5.4% YoY drop from a year earlier, the ninth consecutive month of YoY declines, according to Reuters.

Following the March earthquake, the country embarked on widespread efforts to reduce power use and consequently, industrial activity. Moreover, unusually warm temperatures throughout the Japan also curtailed demand from heating.

Cuts in demand were the largest in Tohoku (-8.8%) and Tokyo (-8.2%), followed by Hokuriku, Chugoku and Kansai, which all registered 4-5% falls.

As several utilities have asked consumers to voluntarily conserve power this winter amid concerns over power shortages, electricity demand is expected to stay week for the coming months.
