Hunter Ports plans AUD2.5bn coal terminal at Newcastle
Mining entrepreneur Nathan Tinkler has proposed a coal terminal that will nearly double current shipments from Australia’s Newcastle port, the world’s largest coal export harbour.
Tinkler’s Hunter Ports MD Steve van Barneveld said the plan would cut disruption to residential areas of Newcastle by rerouting a rail line along industrial land on the south bank of the Hunter River.
Current development plans would see capacity at Newcastle rise to 211Mt by 2015 with the Hunter Ports Project adding a further 100Mt.
