Peru to ration energy in the north
Peru’s mines and energy ministry announced Tuesday that the country will ration energy in the northern part of the country as transmission capacity and hydroelectric power fall short in the key mining area.
Mines and Energy Minister Carlos Herrera said the rationing would start next year and affect areas from Trujillio to Cajamarca. “This is because of the electrical system. The bulk of generation is located in the centre of Peru and there isn’t yet the ability to transmit to the north, which has decreased hydroelectric generation,” he told reporters.
He gave no further indication of how much energy would be rationed or how long the restrictions would last but a formal announcement is expected on Wednesday.
Peru derives 51% of its power from hydro resources while the remainder is based on fossil fuels.
