Healthy Thanksgiving Snacks for Children

So many parents find that their children’s food intake gets thrown off-kilter during the holiday season. Too much of one food item, indulging in desserts, eating foods that they don’t ingest during the course of the year can wreak havoc on a child’s digestive system. To keep your child on track and their body functioning properly, try to incorporate healthy daytime snacks that will help to aid in the digestion of the other food items that they will ingest during the holiday season. Below you will find 4 super healthy and kid-friendly snacks with a Thanksgiving theme, which will help to pique their interest in what you are offering. Before serving these meals to your loved ones make sure that you know about their food intolerance habits. Food intolerance rather than a food allergy can be fatal since the body is unable to process the food. Although, if you are sure about the allergies you can go ahead with these amazing dishes. 

Mini Turkey and Cheese Bites

Ingredients

  • Ritz crackers, two per mini bite
  • Thick sliced Deli Turkey, lean
  • Thick sliced Low-Fat Cheddar Cheese
  • 1/4 cup Dijon Mustard
  • 2 Tbs. Mayonnaise

Instructions

Using a spare Ritz cracker, place it on a slice of turkey and gently cut around it to make a round of turkey that is the same size as the cracker. Repeat until you have the desired amount of turkey rounds, you will need at least one per bite. Follow the same procedure with the Cheddar Cheese. Mix together the Dijon mustard and mayonnaise until incorporated, and smooth onto the flat side of a cracker. Stack on the cheese, turkey, then top with a final cracker. Assemble as many mini turkey and cheese bites as you think will be needed, and pile on a plate for serving.

**For an even healthier treat, substitute the regular Ritz crackers with either wheat crackers or whole-grain bread.

PB  amp; Banana Pinwheels

Ingredients

  • 2 Flour tortillas
  • 4 Tbs. Peanut butter
  • 1 Whole banana, sliced

Instructions

Spread 2 Tbs. of peanut butter on each tortilla, making sure to reach all of the ways to the edges. Along one edge, line banana slices up. On this same end, gently roll the tortilla over the banana slices, continuing to roll until the whole tortilla is now in one roll. Use the peanut butter at the very edge of the tortilla to seal it to the rest. Slice into 1/2 inch thick pinwheels.

Mini Salads with Diced Turkey

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup Diced turkey
  • Shredded low-fat Cheddar Cheese
  • Bagged greens, or fresh salad greens of your choice
  • Low-fat dressing of choice

Instructions

Beginning with the bed of lettuce first, layer your salad with the turkey and cheeses. Top with the dressing of choice.

Disappearing Yogurt Parfaits

Ingredients

  • Ice cream cones, 1 per parfait
  • 2 cups low-fat or fat-free yogurt, flavored
  • Fresh berries, such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries (or a combination)
  • 1 cup granola
  • Instructions

Place a cone in front of you, place about 2 tbs. yogurt into the bottom. Layer with a few berries, a smattering of granola, then repeat once more starting with the yogurt. Continue until you have as many cones as needed.

Kids love this snack, and don’t stop to think about the nutritious benefits of it because it is served in a cone!
